What is a
MUMMY MOT?
A Mummy MOT® is a specialist postnatal assessment carried out by a trained women’s health physiotherapist. It looks at how your body has recovered after pregnancy and birth, whether you had a vaginal birth or a caesarean section, with particular focus on the pelvic floor, abdominal muscles, posture, and overall movement.
£135 · 75 minutes · In person in Thame, Oxfordshire
My clinic diary is currently booking around two to three weeks ahead, with appointments on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Many mums book during pregnancy or in the first few weeks after birth, so their appointment is ready from around six weeks postnatal.
Hoping for something sooner? Book your preferred date, then add yourself to the waitlist when you book. You'll be notified automatically if an earlier space opens up.
Why is a Mummy MOT important?
After having a baby, many women experience changes in their bodies that are often dismissed as “normal” or something they should just live with.
Research shows that:
- Around 6 in 10 women have a tummy gap (diastasis recti) at six weeks after birth, and around 1 in 3 still have one a year later (British Journal of Sports Medicine, 2016)
- Around 1 in 3 women experience urinary leakage in the first year after birth (published meta-analysis evidence)
- Pelvic girdle pain affects around 1 in 5 women during pregnancy, and for around 1 in 10 the pain continues after birth (Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists)
- Changes in core support can contribute to back pain, pelvic pain, bladder or bowel symptoms, and reduced confidence with movement
A Mummy MOT helps identify these issues early and provides appropriate guidance, rather than leaving you to guess or push through symptoms.
Who is a Mummy MOT for?
A Mummy MOT is for any woman who has given birth, regardless of:
- Whether your baby was born vaginally or by caesarean section
- Whether it was 6 weeks ago or several years ago
- Whether you have clear symptoms or simply want reassurance about your recovery
Both vaginal births and caesarean sections place significant demands on the body. A Mummy MOT helps you understand how your body has healed and what support may help you move forward with confidence.
How is a Mummy MOT different from a routine postnatal check?
Unlike a standard 6–8 week GP check, a Mummy MOT is a physiotherapy-led, in-depth assessment focused on how your body functions and moves after birth.
It is not a “clearance” appointment, but a chance to:
-
Understand what is happening in your body
-
Address symptoms early rather than ignoring them
-
Receive tailored advice rather than generic exercises
What does a Mummy MOT assessment involve?
Your appointment lasts 75 minutes and includes:
-
A detailed discussion about your pregnancy, birth, recovery, and current concerns
-
Assessment of pelvic floor muscle function (internal and/or external, with your consent)
-
Examination of the abdominal muscles, including tummy gap (diastasis recti)
-
Postural and movement screening
-
Screening for bladder, bowel, or sexual health symptoms
-
Opportunity to ask questions in a supportive, private setting
This is a clinical assessment, not a fitness class, and everything is tailored to you.
Your Mummy MOT is with Kim

I’m Kim, a Chartered Physiotherapist with over 25 years of experience and specialist training in pelvic health. I know how vulnerable it can feel to talk about leaking, tummy gaps or things not feeling right after birth. Nothing you say will be dismissed as “just what happens after a baby”. Your appointment is unhurried, private, and led by you. Internal examination is only ever done with your consent, and only if it is useful.
What Happens After the Assessment?
Following your Mummy MOT, you will receive a bespoke postnatal recovery plan
based on your body, lifestyle, and goals.
This may include:
-
Guidance on safe daily activities such as lifting, feeding, and carrying your baby
-
Individualised postnatal exercises to support pelvic floor, core, posture, and strength
-
Advice on returning to exercise or sport safely
-
Education and reassurance about what is normal, what can improve, and when further support may be helpful
The aim is to help you feel informed, supported, and confident in your recovery.
Rebuilding strength after your Mummy MOT
Recovery does not end when the assessment does. Many women continue with the Spine & Pelvic Strength Club, my physiotherapist-led online membership. Weekly live classes and an on-demand library help you rebuild your core, pelvic floor and whole-body strength at your own pace, for £29 a month, cancel anytime.
When should I book a Mummy MOT?
Many women choose to book from around 6–8 weeks postnatal, but there is no time limit. If you are months or even years post-birth and still experiencing symptoms or uncertainty, a Mummy MOT can still be beneficial.
If you would like to understand your postnatal recovery better and feel supported in your next steps, a Mummy MOT can help.
